What led you to apply to APHD at OISE?
I was very adamant on obtaining a master鈥檚 degree in child development, but was unsure of the path I wanted to embark on鈥 research or professional development? The MEd DPE program felt like the best opportunity to figure this out as it is very flexible in the courses we can enroll in, as well as having an opportunity to complete a research practicum.
What was your past experience like?
Most of my experience comes from volunteering at various organizations in different mental health support and research roles. I had been working as an Instructor Therapist at an autism center while volunteering at Archie鈥檚 Cochlear Implant Lab at SickKids as a researcher. This volunteer role led me into a position as the Administrative Assistant for the department of Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery at SickKids. On the side I also volunteered at SickKids as a Child Life support in the cardiac unit, spent time on the youth council on the National Youth Action Council at CAMH, and was a youth mentor at Youth Assisting Youth.
Are there any past accomplishments that you would like to highlight?
My acceptance into OISE! For a couple of years it had been my goal continue my higher education. I am extremely grateful for the individuals who supported me throughout this journey and who helped me achieve my goals.
What is one thing you like most about your experience so far at OISE?
How supportive everyone in the institute is! On my first day at OISE I was greeted by so many warm personalities, easing the nerves of starting a new program in a brand new place. OISE also puts in a lot of effort to ensure students feel supported in their careers and academics by providing us with many workshops! From the administrative team to the professors and student mentors, I feel certain that whatever issues may arise, there is always someone to turn to and ask for help.
What is your favourite thing about Toronto?
I love seeing the level of diversity that exists within the city; differences in ethnicities, fashion, personalities, hobbies鈥 the city is very inclusive and accepting of all backgrounds. If you鈥檙e interested in trying something new, chances are you鈥檒l find it in Toronto!
What does your 鈥渨eekend鈥 typically look like?
I try my best to complete my school work during the working week, but if there is anything left over I start my weekend by finishing up the tasks. I typically spend my weekends rollerskating at skateparks, going on hikes and adventures with my best friends, and taking time to rest before the new week.
What are some of your hobbies & interests?
I am an AVID rollerskater!! It has been my most passionate hobby over the past year and a half. I enjoy photography and videography, and combine my interests by creating fun videos showcasing new skating tricks I pick up, sharing them onto social media.
What is your favourite type of cuisine?
Italian!! While I will never pass up an opportunity to eat Middle Eastern dishes, pasta will have my heart forever!
Where do you see yourself after you achieve your degree from APHD?
In all honesty, I don鈥檛 know where my life will lead after the program. I know that there will be lots of personal and academic growth during this journey which may change the trajectory of my life. I hope to work towards becoming a Certified Play Therapist and Program Evaluator. I would like to enter the workforce either continuing in developmental research, working with children or evaluating programs, and eventually work towards obtaining my PhD in developmental psychology.
